Ternopil
Ternopol is the center of the region, known for its castles, caves, waterfalls and rivers. Here start the miraculous ways of rafting down the Dnestr Canyon, traveling to the caves of Ternopol region, to the highest flat Dzhurin waterfall. The city is situated in the west of Ukraine on the river Sereet. It was mentioned at first in 1540. Nowadays it is the administrative, business and cultural center of Ternopol region.
Ternopil Pond
Ternopil pond or lake - is a large artificial pond, set in the center of Ternopil in the place of swamps on the river Seret. A large pond in the center of the city was created at the initiative of Crown Hetman J. Tarnovsky during the construction of the Ternopil Castle. The main purpose of the pond was to protect the castle. In addition it was also used for fish breeding. Today Ternopil pond is surrounded by a park.
Ternopil Drama Theater named after Taras Shevchenko
Taras Shevchenko Drama Theater in Ternopol was founded in 1915 by a famous theater director and actor Les Kurbas. During the USSR years the history of theater troupe entwined with the history of mobile Workers' and Peasants Shevchenko Drama Theater that was founded in 1930 in Akhtyrka, Sumy region. The troupe of Ternopol Theater was founded on the basis of that theater.
The old Dominican church
The old Dominican church can be seen from the square. It’s a complex that consists of a church and monastic cells that were built in 1749-1779. The project of the church was created by a famous architect August Moshchinsky. Unfortunately, the monastery created by J. Potocky was dramatically damaged by the World War II. Only in 1953 it was finally restored to host an art gallery, and in 1992 the Dominican church was acquired by the Greek Catholic community, who founded the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Art gallery had to move to another place – the Regional art museum.
